Kavanaugh Should Have Been Suspended

The confirmation hearings of Justice Brett Kavanaugh before the Senate Judiciary Committee took a turn when a woman accused him of touching her inappropriately…IN HIGH SCHOOL! Let me be clear, I am not condoning or excusing sexual misconduct regardless of the age of the accused. If Mr. Kavanaugh did attempt to pull down a girls swimsuit or touch her inappropriately, he should have been suspended BY HIS HIGH SCHOOL in the early 1980’s when it happened. Attempting to smear him more than 35 years later is not becoming of the US Senate or the Confirmation Process. If you listen to the Whiskey Congress Podcast, you will know that I am a left-leaning, harsh critic of the President and you could logically assume that I don’t want Kavanaugh to be confirmed. Having said that, his confirmation is essentially inevitable. The mere fact that the best “smear” that Democrats were able to muster is an allegation of inappropriate behavior when he was 17 years old. This isn’t equivalent to the allegations leveled at failed GOP Senate Candidate Roy Moore. Moore was accused of assaulting 7 different women when he was in his 30’s and his accusers were teenagers. This allegation is a high school event worthy of High School Justice. Perhaps as amazing as the age of the allegation is the wild variability of the media’s reporting on Mr. Kavanaugh. Republicans have painted him as a dedicated family man who coaches his daughter’s sports teams because he is extremely dedicated to his family and the development of young people. Some in the media have suggested that Kavanaugh coaches young women because he is a predator. Yes, someone said that. I wish I knew who it was but I was driving and flipping channels on Sirius XM. Think about that. Two sides of a political fight are analyzing the same piece of information (referring to Kavanaugh’s being a coach for his daughter’s teams) and their interpretation ranges from “dedicated family man” to “predator”. I hate when the media does things that fuel the “Fake News Mantra”. Making wild accusations like that without a shred of evidence don’t help the media’s cause. Let me be clear again, I am not happy about the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh. But I cannot justify his being voted down because of an allegation touching a fellow student inappropriately when they were both in high school. But had he been accused when the alleged event happened, he absolutely should have been suspended….and that’s probably the most that would have happened.

WASHINGTON — The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, under mounting pressure from senators of his own party, will call President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh, and the woman who has accused him of sexual assault before the committee on Monday for extraordinary public hearings only weeks before the midterm elections.

In setting the hearing, Senator Charles E. Grassley, Republican of Iowa, backed down from a committee vote on Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination, planned for this Thursday, and pushed a confirmation once seen as inevitable into limbo.
